The Department of Hungarian Studies is a unique centre for the study of the Hungarian language, literature, and culture: it is the only university department in the Czech Republic that offers a full programme in Hungarian studies and conducts systematic research in this field, with a special focus on Czech–Hungarian relations. Our mission is to provide high-quality education, carry out scholarly research, and foster cultural dialogue between Czech and Hungarian communities.
The tradition of teaching Hungarian and Hungarian Studies at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University dates back to the 1850s. Since 1883, instruction has continued almost uninterrupted to the present day. The Prague Hungarian studies department has trained numerous experts who have gone on to careers in academia, research, translation, and the private sector. A detailed account of the history of Hungarian language instruction at Charles University from the 1850s to 2012 can be found in the following study (in Czech): Dějiny výuky maďarštiny a maďarské filologie na českých univerzitách (Januška, 2018).
